Billy joined the Duke University Golf Club in April 2011 as the head golf course superintendent. He graduated from Mississippi State University in May 2002 with a bachelor’s degree in Agronomy with an emphasis in Golf and Sports Turf Management. While attending MSU, Billy worked at various golf courses which included Augusta National Golf Club and with the United States Golf Association.
After graduation, Billy accepted his first position as Jack Nicklaus’ personal superintendent at his home in North Palm Beach, FL. While working for Mr. Nicklaus, Billy was responsible for all turf related areas of his estate which included his putting green, tennis courts, practice bunkers, and general turf related areas.
Following 2 years of employment for the Golden Bear, Billy was recruited to assist with the construction of The Club at Carlton Woods, a Jack Nicklaus/Tom Fazio private golf club community, in The Woodlands, TX. During his time in Texas, Billy was responsible for the daily operation of the Fazio Course. He built his skills as a golf course superintendent and helped make Carlton Woods one of the premier private golf clubs in the Texas.
After 6 successful years in Texas, Billy was hired by Steelwood Country Club in Loxley, AL. Steelwood enlisted Billy to improve their golf course conditions and help bring back the clubs reputation as one of the leading private golf clubs in Alabama. In only 13 months, Billy built a staff and crew that worked tirelessly to improve all turf conditions and reclaimed Steelwood’s status as a leader in the Alabama golf community.
Billy resides in Durham with his wife Melissa and daughter Madison. Billy enjoys spending time with his family, playing golf, attending college sporting events, enjoying the outdoors, and traveling.
